My heart aches, and a drowsy numbness pains
My sense, as though of hemlock I had drunk,
Or emptied some dull opiate to the drains
One minute past, and Lethe-wards had sunk:
'Tis not through envy of thy happy lot,
But being too happy in thine happiness, --
That thou, light-winged Dryad of the trees
In some melodious plot
Of beechen green, and shadows numberless,
Singest of summer in full-throated ease.

O, for a draught of vintage! that hath been
Cool'd a long age in the deep-delved earth,
Tasting of Flora and the country green,
Dance, and Provençal song, and sunburnt mirth!
O for a beaker full of the warm South,
Full of the true, the blushful Hippocrene,
With beaded bubbles winking at the brim,
And purple-stained mouth;
That I might drink, and leave the world unseen,
And with thee fade away into the forest dim:

Fade far away, dissolve, and quite forget
What thou...

Should film music be original? That's a question that goes right back to the earliest of film sound. But with new technology came changes - and just maybe, the answer to why all Marvel films seem to have forgettable music.

Erik Satie - Gymnopédie No.1

Satie was introduced as a "gymnopedist" in 1887, shortly before writing his most famous compositions, the Gymnopédies. Later, he also referred to himself as a "phonometrograph" or "phonometrician" (meaning "someone who measures (and writes down) sounds") preferring this designation to that of "musician," after having been called "a clumsy but subtle technician" in a book on contemporary French composers published in 1911.

Satie was a colourful figure in the early 20th century Parisian avant-garde. He was a precursor to later artistic movements such as minimalism, repetitive music and the Theatre of the Absurd.
The Gymnopédies, published in Paris starting in 1888, are three piano compositions written by French composer and pianist, Erik Satie.

For background detail on Greek theatre productions at the National Theatre, see our online exhibit http://www.google.com/culturalinstitute/exhibit/greek-drama-at-the-national-theatre/gQY_KfFn

This film explores the defining aspects of Greek Theatre. The theatre of Ancient Greece flourished between 550 BC and 220 BC. A festival honouring the god Dionysus was held in Athens, out of which three dramatic genres emerged: tragedy, comedy and the satyr play.

Western theatre has its roots in the theatre of Ancient Greece and the plays that originated there. This collection features video about Greek theatre and productions of Greek plays staged at the National Theatre.

Featured in this film are experts Edith Hall, professor of Classics at Kings College, London, Laura Swift from the Open University, Dr Sean McElvoy from Varndean College, Brighton and actor Michael Grady-Hall from the cast of Antigone.

This film includes performance footage from the 2012 National Theatre production of Antigone, directed by Polly Findlay, starring Christopher Eccleston as Creon and Jodie Whittaker in the title role.

This film was made and directed by Chloe White for the National Theatre.

How do art and morality intersect? Today we look at an ethically questionable work of art and discuss R. G. Collingwood’s view that art is best when it helps us live better lives. We’ll go over Aristotle’s concept of catharsis and how it can resolve the problem of tragedy. We are also exploring the paradox of fiction and the debate between autonomism and moralism.

The set of ideas we can call Romanticism is responsible for making our relationships extremely difficult. We shouldn’t give up on love; we should just recognise that it’s a skill, not an emotion.

Mr. Richey explains the origins of the Romantic movement as a rebellion against the values of the Enlightenment and the ugliness of the Industrial Revolution. The Romantics offered a critique of progress as defined by technological advancement and luxury. The works of Romantic authors, such as Oliver Goldsmith, Mary Shelley, and William Blake are discussed in the context of Romantic values.

This lecture was designed chiefly for students preparing for the AP European History (AP Euro) exam, but will also be useful for students of Western Civilization and World History, as well as lifelong learners.

Another lecture on Romantic Art will be forthcoming.

The Enlightenment was a major development in the history of European thought and had numerous ramifications for 18th century Europeans that have spread across the globe to the modern day. Much of the way the West looks at the world and its societies was shaped in this relatively brief period of time. So here is my little introduction to a time of great thinkers and great ideas.

An introduction to Romantic Art for AP European History students. I use works by Caspar David Friedrich, Karl Schinkel, William Blake, and Eugene Delacroix to exhibit the characteristics of Romantic Art, which emphasized landscape painting, as well as childhood, the Middle Ages, and human emotions.

Servanthood is the blurred line between wage slavery and chattel slavery but in recent years popular costume dramas set in the British colonial period such as "Downton Abbey" and "Poldark" whitewash this for the sake of romanticism. This is the first of three in a 2012 documentary series which looks at what life was like for British servants in that period. Unfortunately what appears as history here is still the reality for millions around the world, including children.

With only a few decades to cover, Mr. Osborne tries to move quickly through the brief Romantic Period only to find that the classic works keep on coming. Discussed here are poems by William Blake, William Wordsworth, John Keats as well as the novels Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen and Frankenstein by Mary Shelley.
