Roman Architecture (HSAR 252)
Professor Kleiner focuses on Ostia, the port of Rome, characterized by its multi-storied residential buildings and its widespread use of brick-faced concrete. She begins with the city's public face--the Forum, Capitolium, Theater, and Piazzale delle Corporazioni. The Piazzale, set behind the Theater, was the location of various shipping companies with black-and-white mosaics advertising their business. Professor Kleiner examines the Baths of Neptune and the Insula of Diana, a brick apartment building with four floors that housed a number of Ostia's working families. The Insula of Diana and other similar structures, including warehouses like the Horrea Epagathiana, demonstrate a fundamental feature of second-century Ostia: the appreciation of the aesthetic qualities of brick facing. Since the time of Nero, brick was customarily covered with stucco and paint, but these Ostian buildings are faced with exposed brick, the color, texture, and design of which make it attractive in its own right. The lecture ends with a survey of several single family dwellings in Ostia, including the fourth-century House of Cupid and Psyche, notable for the pastel-colored marble revetment on its walls and floors and for a charming statue of the...

How did a Roman bath complex function? Where did bathing fit into the Roman daily routine, and what does it tell us about Roman society? This segment explores the technical and social aspects of Roman bathing -- one of the signature features of Roman culture -- using the archaeological, architectural, and technological evidence preserved at Ostia Antica, which has more than a dozen bath complexes of varying size and complexity. Each video is a co-production between the AIRC and Northeastern University (Prof. Brian Thomson). Filming was done in May 2011. While Italy's new coalition government has focused on immigration in its first days in power, it is also facing major social issues.
The seaside town of Ostia, just outside the capital Rome, has been hit hard by poverty and the rise of organised crime.
The problems in the town have been acknowledged by the head of the Roman Catholic Church.
During a visit on Sunday, the first in 50 years by a pontiff, Pope Francis condemned the organisations that have turned Ostia into a centre of mafia violence.
Al Jazeera's Sonia Gallego reports from Ostia on a deeply divided community.

When people think of a sponge, they usually imagine something like this: a cleaning sponge for washing the dishes…or for washing the car. Cleaning sponges are synthetic these days, but they used to come from the ocean.
Back in the days before we had synthetic sponges for housework, cleaning sponges did come from the ocean. They were harvested by hard-hat divers walking along the ocean floor in heavy weighted boots with a rake-like tool to pluck...
