A new type of white dwarf star nicknamed “Dox” has been discovered by a team of Brazilian astronomers led by Kepler de Souza Oliveira at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil. The new dwarf star is the only known star of any kind with an almost pure oxygen atmosphere. Dox is slightly bigger than our home planet and has 60 percent the mass of our sun. Margaret J. A "white dwarf", also called a "degenerate dwarf", is a stellar remnant composed mostly of electron-degenerate matter. A white dwarf is very dense: its mass is comparable to that of the Sun, and its volume is comparable to that of the Earth. A white dwarf's faint luminosity comes from the emission of stored thermal energy. The nearest known white dwarf is Sirius B, at 8.6 light years, the smaller component of the Sirius binary star. There are currently thought to be eight white dwarfs among the hundred star systems nearest the Sun. The unusual faintness of white dwarfs was first recognized in 1910. The name "white dwarf" was coined by Willem Luyten in 1922.

White dwarfs are thought to be the final evolutionary state of stars whose mass is not high enough to become a neutron star—over 97% of the stars in the Milky Way. , §1. Welcome to another experiment in Universe Sandbox 2, for science.

Astronomers at the University of Warwick said this week they now have the first direct evidence that white dwarf stars – stars in an advanced stage of their evolution – ultimately solidify into crystals. That idea has been around for decades, but now new observations back it up. The astronomers who conducted this study say our skies must be filled with these crystal white dwarfs. They also point out that – long after it has swollen up as a red giant and swallowed the Earth – our sun is destined to become a crystal white dwarf, too, billions of years from now.

Scientists have found evidence of the dimmest and coldest white dwarf ever detected.

According to NASA, a white dwarf is what stars like the Sun become after they have exhausted their nuclear fuel.

Scientists have possibly found evidence of the dimmest and coldest white dwarf star ever detected.

They did so using the National Radio Astronomy Observatory's Green Bank Telescope and Very Long Baseline Array in combination with information provided by observatories.

Said one of the individuals on the team, "It's a really remarkable object. These things should be out there, but because they are so dim they are very hard to find."

While these ancient white dwarf stars emit very little light and have relatively low temperatures, theoretically they aren't a rarity at all.

What is hard to come by is a telescope powerful enough to pick up the signs of one.

When stars die, they collapse and as time goes on continue to cool and fade.

This one, being an estimated 11 billion years old, is below the visibility range of even the best optics.

It was discovered through a combination of tracking radio waves being emitted by a companion star and careful calculations....

Astronomers have found evidence of a star that whips around a likely black hole twice an hour. This could be the tightest orbital dance ever seen by a black hole and a companion star in our own Milky Way galaxy.

The stellar couple—known as a binary—is located in the globular cluster 47 Tucanae, a dense cluster of stars in our galaxy about 14,800 light years away from Earth.

While astronomers have known about the binary for many years, it wasn't until 2015 that a team led by researchers from Curtin University and the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) found that it was likely made up of a black hole pulling material from a companion star.

New observations from Chandra show the system—known as X9—consistently changes in X-ray brightness every 28 minutes, which is likely the length of time it takes the companion star to make one complete orbit around the black hole.

Along with evidence of large amounts of oxygen in the system, this makes a strong case that X9 contains a white dwarf star orbiting a black hole at just 2.5 times the separation between the Earth and the Moon.

when stars get older, they start to build up heat in their cores due to the fact that the helium "ash" in their cores basically hangs on to some of the heat that is produced by the fusing of hydrogen in much the same way that embers in a fire heat up and remain hot long after the fire is out, except that, in the case of a star, those helium ashes don't get the chance to ever cool down

this heating of the stellar core increases the radiation given off by the core to a point where it causes the outer atmosphere of a star to "puff" outwards in spite of the star's gravity, making the star expand to a much greater size than it used to be. This heating of the core can also result in those outer layers getting caught up in the intensified solar wind, thus those outer layers get dragged out into space, meaning that the star will start to lose mass at a faster rate.

however, eventually the core will run out of gas and the radiation that was previously "puffing-up" the outer layers of the star, switches off.

At this point, gravity no longer has to contend with the outward pressure of the radiation coming from the core, and the star will collapse.

Astronomers using ESO’s Very Large Telescope, along with other telescopes on the ground and in space, have discovered a new type of exotic binary star.

In the system AR Scorpii a rapidly spinning white dwarf star powers electrons up to almost the speed of light. These high energy particles release blasts of radiation that lash the companion red dwarf star, and cause the entire system to pulse dramatically every 1.97 minutes with radiation ranging from the ultraviolet to radio.

The star system AR Scorpii, or AR Sco for short, lies in the constellation of Scorpius, 380 light-years from Earth. It comprises a rapidly spinning white dwarf [2], the size of Earth but containing 200 000 times more mass, and a cool red dwarf companion one third the mass of the Sun [3], orbiting one another every 3.6 hours in a cosmic dance as regular as clockwork.

The research will be published in the journal Nature on 28 July 2016.

An exotic binary star system 380 light-years away has been identified as an elusive white dwarf pulsar – the first of its kind ever to be discovered in the universe – thanks to research by the University of Warwick.

Professors Tom Marsh and Boris Gänsicke of the University of Warwick’s Astrophysics Group, with Dr David Buckley from the South African Astronomical Observatory, have identified the star AR Scorpii (AR Sco) as the first white dwarf version of a pulsar – objects found in the 1960s and associated with very different objects called neutron stars.

The white dwarf pulsar has eluded astronomers for over half a century.

AR Sco contains a rapidly spinning, burnt-out stellar remnant called a white dwarf, which lashes its neighbour – a red dwarf – with powerful beams of electrical particles and radiation, causing the entire system to brighten and fade dramatically twice every two minutes.
The latest research establishes that the lash of energy from AR Sco is a focused ‘beam’, emitting concentrated radiation in a single direction – much like a particle accelerator – something which is totally unique in the known universe.
