MPLS can create end-to-end paths that act like circuit-switched connections, but deliver layer 3 IP packet.
As we know, routing is the layer 3 function while switching is the layer 2 function. MPLs makes those routers on the Internet act like switches on a local network. That is why MPLS is also called 2.5 layer protocol.

The OSI Model Explained

What Is this OSI Model?

The OSI model (Open System Interconnect) is a theoretical stack of 7 layers that can be used as a reference to understand how a network operates. The model was introduced to standardize networks in a way that allowed multi-vendor systems, prior to this you would only be able to have a one vendor network as the devices could not communicate with other vendor devices.

The Layers

Application (layer 7)

This layer is where the application and user communicates. Application specific protocols are used here such as SMTP (simple mail transfer protocol) for sending emails from Outlook.

Presentation (layer 6)

This layer formats the data in a way that the receiving application can understand it. This layer is also able to encrypt and decrypt date if needed.

Session (layer 5)

This layer is responsible for establishing and terminating of connections between devices.

Transport (layer 4)

The transport layer of OSI Model is used for error handling and sequencing to unsure no data is lost. This layer also adds source and destination port numbers

Network (layer 3)

The network layer handles IP address routing....

Enroll to Full Course:
The "OSI Model" also known as "OSI Reference Model" is discussed here in 2 parts: a) Understanding OSI Reference Model b) OSI Model layers

a) Understanding OSI Model (00:22):
The OSI reference model is one such communication model. OSI stands for "Open Systems Interconnection" which means that every system participating in this model is open for communication with other systems. This model was first defined by an organization called as ISO. The OSI model divides the communication into 7 layers.

b) OSI Model layers (2:15) :
Quick Look of the 7 layers of the OSI reference Model:
7) Application Layer is where the users interact
with applications to provide data
6) Presentation Layer is concerned with the format
of data exchanged between the end systems
5) Session Layer allows users on different
machines to create sessions between them
4) Transport Layer is concerned with end to end
communication of messages
3) Network Layer is concerned with routing of
packets to correct destination
2) Data Link Layer is concerned with transmission

When a host on the network doesn't know the MAC address of the device it wants to reach, it will broadcast an ARP request. All hosts on the segment will receive this ARP request and one of them will respond with an ARP reply. In this ARP reply, you will find the IP address and MAC address of the destination host.

Once the host that sent the ARP requests receives this information, it will be able to reach the destination.

Not surprisingly, embedded devices and people use the Internet very differently.

People make use of the Internet through the Web, e-mail, and texting. In the Internet of Things, embedded devices exchange information with each other. But these devices don't have the machine equivalent of Web browsers and social media. Not yet, at least.

When designing your IoT device, you have to think about how your local network connects to the Internet. You can do it with a gateway. Or you can build this capability into the device itself.

At the heart of the Internet is TCP/IP, the Internet protocol suite. It can be represented using the OSI seven-layer reference model.

TCP is used for most of our human interactions with the Internet: e-mail, Web browsing, and so on. And so many people think that TCP should be the only protocol used at the Transport layer. It provides the concept of a logical connection, acknowledgement of transmitted packets, error checking, and flow control. But for an embedded system, TCP can be overkill.

UDP is a simpler protocol than TCP. It's commonly used for the domain name system and for DHCP. But it's now finding a new home in sensor data acquisition and remote control. And it's better...
