Low back pain is by far the most common source of discomfort we deal with. The irony is, a lot of times what we feel is rooted in the lower back is actually caused by muscles not in the back at all. In this video, I’m going to show you how the glute medius could be the real cause of your back pain and a quick exercise you can do to relieve your discomfort instantly. Once gone, I’m also going to show you a few additional exercises you can do to make sure your low back pain never returns.

The gluteus medius is sandwiched between the glute maximus and minimus and lies in and around the hip area. The role of the muscle is to abduct your hip or lift your leg out to the side in either standing or side lying and to keep your pelvis level whenever you take a step. Prolonged sitting during the day as well as an unequal weight distribution when standing are two of the most common reasons for this muscle to get weak and imbalanced.

Saddle height is one of the key components of bike fit. So, it's a great thing to work on if you want to feel comfortable on your bike but don't want to spend your money on a high end bike fit just.

Your Spin® instructor probably forgot to tell you something pretty important, but don't worry, Indoor Cycling gurus Cat Kom and Brian LaRose are here to clue you in. So, what is the lesson left out? It's how your foot should be positioned on the pedal, and it REALLY matters my friends.

Let's start with why this is important: if your foot is positioned improperly, you might experience minor issues like foot numbness, cramping or loss of power, but worse yet you might develop knee problems, achilles tendonitis, improper ankling (ankle mobility) shin splints and/or plantar fasciitis, which is a stabbing pain on the bottom of the heel. Ouch! You don't want these things people, so pay attention to what's next... the how.

It all starts with how you place your foot in the toe cage or where your cleat is located on your cycling shoe.

-With toe cages, make sure you wear a stiffer bottom shoe and then place the ball of your foot directly in the middle so your toes aren’t crammed into the front of the cage. The most common mistake is pushing your toes all the way into the cage. Obviously, the space between your foot and front of the cage will depend on your shoe size, but be mindful of the area between the two and be sure not to...

If you ever left your Spinning® class with a killer workout, but an aching back, watch this video to gets some tips and tricks on how to deal and heal with the back pain from cycling. More importantly, listen up for some proactive ideas on why it might be happening in the first place!

Lower back pain from Indoor Cycling can be related to multiple factors including improper bike setup, lack of stretching or warm-up, as well as poor form while riding.

As soon as you see that bike, set it up for a pain free successful ride. For the veteran rider the handlebars should be about an inch higher than the seat, but if you have any back issues you’ll generally want the handle bars a few inches higher than the saddle. Additionally, your knee should be positioned directly above the ball of your foot when looking at the front of your pedal stroke.

Although cycling classes are great, one “not so great” aspect is coming out of a workout with a sore tush or achy joints. Avoid pain and stress during your next cycling class by watching this speedy tutorial with the lovely Cat Kom & Bethany on how to properly set up your stationary bike.

In general what you’ll learn is that in order to ride pain free,

Seat Height – Adjust the seat height so that your knees are bent slightly at the bottom of your pedal stroke.
Fore/Aft Position – Keep your arms a comfortable distance from the handlebars, and your elbows slightly bent.
Handlebar Height – For your first several rides, start with the handlebars in a relatively high position.

To get the most out of your next cycling class, it’s imperative to pay attention to your form throughout the ride, especially your posture. Studio SWEAT onDemand founder, Cat Kom, and her favorite sidekick and trainer, Bethany, are here to give you some posture pointers so that next time you get on that bike, your body is suited for the ride!

Tip 1: Make sure you're on the widest part of the saddle (seat). If your butt is sore or feeling uncomfortable after your cycling class, it might have to do with incorrect positioning on the saddle. Next time you ride, make sure to place that tush on the widest part of the saddle, while hinging forward from your hip line, aligning your knees with your hips and feet. Consider this the most important tip since if you don’t have the proper positioning, all other body components will fall out of line and hinder your comfort during and after the workout. And when we say comfort, don't think that means your comfort zone. We want you out of that!

Tip 2: Straighten that Spine. When it comes to your back, the spine should ALWAYS be fairly straight. Stay mindful and avoid rounding or hunching the back. Quasimodo is a no no! To get there, make sure your handlebars are an inch or 2 higher than your seat, your seat...
