Osmosis.
The movement of water molecules through a selectively permeable membrane from a region of high water concentration to low water concentration is called osmosis.
A solution where there is higher water concentration outside the cell is called a hypotonic solution.
A solution where there is lower water concentration outside the cell is called a hypertonic solution.

In this video we are going to discover how cells take in useful substances and remove waste using three methods of transportation: diffusion, osmosis and then in the second part we will look at active transport.

The exchange of materials occurs between cells and their environment, across the cell membrane. To make this exchange as efficient as possible, some organisms have evolved specialised exchange surfaces like the alveoli in the lungs, or root hairs in plants or the nephrons in kidneys.

Depending upon what is being exchanged and which direction along the concentration gradient things are travelling will determine whether diffusion, osmosis or active transport will be used.

Diffusion is the process in which particles spread out from each other. They move from high concentration to an area of low concentration, down the concentration gradient until they are evenly distributed.

Osmosis is very similar to diffusion but just for water. It is the movement of water into or out of a cell. Again, it is the movement from a dilute solution (so high concentration of water molecules) down the concentration gradient to a more concentrated solution - so low concentration of water molecules. The water molecules move across a partially permeable...

[I made a mistake in calculating percent change. Percent Change = (Final Mass - Orginal Mass) / Orignal Mass. Sorry!]

To test the semi-permeable qualities of the inner membrane of an egg shell, I place one egg in a hypertonic solution (corn syrup) and one egg in a hypotonic solution (water).

Using time-lapse footage, you can watch one egg shrink in size and one egg increase in size due to osmosis (the movement of water through a semi-permeable membrane from an area of low solute concentration to an area of high solute concentration) in order to reach dynamic equilibrium (a state in which all regions have an equal solute concentration).

Osmosis is a special type of diffusion that applies to water and other solvents.

If you take a litre of pure water, and compare it to a litre of sea water, which is very salty, there is less water present in sea water litre because some of that litre is occupied by salt. The saltwater has a lower water potential.

If there is a partially permeable membrane, like a cell membrane, separating two different samples of water, there will be a net movement of water from the place with higher water potential to the place with lower water potential.

This is the reason plant roots take in water: the rain water the enters the soil has a higher water potential than inside of the roots, so water moves into the roots by osmosis.

We can demonstrate this in a lab setting using potatoes.
First you’ll need a cork borer to get your potato strips. Push it through the potato, then use the narrower piece to push the strip out.
For this experiment we need 18 strips. Once...

Study of Osmosis :-
Osmosis is the process in which solvent molecules moves through a semi-permeable membrane from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration until the amount of fluid is equalised on both sides of the semipermeable membrane. The fluid that passes through the semipermeable membrane is known as the solvent, while the dissolved substance in the fluid is known as the solute. A solution that is separated from another solution by a semi-permeable membrane can have three osmotic states: isotonic, hypotonic and hypertonic. In an isotonic solution is the pressure at both sides...
