To continue the series I run through, at a high level, the four main types of antenna (aerials) that you may come across as you embark on your First person View (FPV) hobby - Whip/dipole, circular polarized, helical and patch.

Each of these has benefits and down sides and in this video \I try and give a rounded view of each. There is not perfect antenna for everyone but knowing the best use case can make sure you use the best one for the way you fly.

Vor dem ersten FPV Flug gilt es das Fatshark Predator Set mit dem DJI Phantom Quadrokopter zu verbinden. Damit das Set flexibel genutzt und bei Nichtbenutzung wieder entfernt werden kann, befestige ich Sender, Stromversorgung und Kamera mit Klettband. Der Sender kommt nach hinten, Kamera und Stromversorgung nach vorne. Zu guter Letzt nehme ich noch den Empfänger samt Videobrille in Betrieb und dann bin ich bereit für den ersten Testflug.

Im zweiten Teil der Serie First Person View für Einsteiger gehe ich detailliert auf die Komponenten eines FPV Sets ein, welche sich am Modellflugzeug befinden. Zunächst zeige ich den Unterschied zwischen Stabantennen und Cloverleaf Antennen und gehe auf SMA und RP-SMA Anstennenstecker ein. Dann sprechen wir über die Sendeleistung des Senders und die nutzbaren Frequenzen in den Bändern A, B, E und F. Außerdem zeige ich wie FPV Kameras und Actioncams wie die GoPro mit einem Sender verbunden werden können und wo die Vorteile der beiden Kamerasysteme liegen. Zu guter Letzt gehe ich noch auf die Stromversorgung von FPV Sender und Kamera ein.

How far can a 25mw vtx reach?

Calculated range is roughly 2500m under ideal condition (based on 5.8ghz 2.5km free space loss 116db, -90 db receiver sensitivity on 13db patch antenna. Physics: rx strength = tx eirp - free space loss + rx antenna gain = 14 -116 +13 = -89dbm)

In the real world we discovered even though relatively low power, a 25mw vtx can actually reach in excess of 1500m LOS in a typical environment, that is rather pleasant surprise.

I was curious how far I can get with my cheap Eachine 25mw 5.8ghz VTX (http://bit.ly/1lufZG2), using different types of antennas. We test this using cheap rubber ducky antennas, ImmersionRC SpiroNets and Birds Eye View Dome and Pulsar antennas (http://bit.ly/1XViC4M).

In the video we use a small testbed and walk away as far as possible from the VTX while still having a flyable picture. The distance using a smartphone app based on GPS. This is an unscientific test and possible also not highly accurate, since 1) I’m moving on the ground and 2) There is no interference (like from ESCs, motors, etc.) close to the VTX. But my aim here is to just get an idea of the range. So take this with a grain of salt please.

For the comparison, please note these types of antennas are very different. The rubberduckies are omnidirectional and cheap. The spironets are omnidirectional and of a higher quality. The antennas from Birds Eye View are omnidirectional (Dome) and directional (Pulsar). So this is not an antenna comparison, which would be unfair because the types of antennas differ. I’m just trying to get a first idea of how far one can realistically get with that video transmitter.

I saw these a couple of weeks ago so ordered a set to have a look at, for $30 they are a great value, I paid £24 delivered (about a tenth the cost of fatshark goggles !).

The kit includes everything you need except a battery (2/3S with JST or 5.5/2.1 barrel connector) and a video receiver (can plug into fatshark goggles if you have them with built in receiver, or a cheap separate receiver for 5.8Ghz or whatever video gear you're using).

You will need a video receiver, but if you already have one, or a set of fatshark goggles you can connect these up to run a 2nd screen for a passenger or to mount on a tripod for a quick check/look screen which I can see would be very useful for AP flights.

Das waren 2 super Flugtage am Kaiser-Wilhelm-Denkmal - klasse Motiv, schöne Natur und nette Leute. Einziger Wermutstropfen: Wechselhaftes Wetter und tückische Winde...

Videoempfang war bei maximaler Reichweite grisselig aber fliegbar

Ich wollte mal wissen wie weit ich mit meinem 25mW Sender noch FPV-Empfang habe - 1,3 km - Somit war ich fast ausser Sichtflugweite. Es wurde keine Richtantenne verwendet, nur standard FatShark SPW für Tx und Rx.

Um diese Reichweite zu bekommen sollte der FPV-Tx möglichst weit UNTER dem Copter angebracht werden (Antenne auch nach unten ausrichten) - am besten mit am Gimbal befestigen wenn eure Kamera wenig RF-Rauschen verursacht

If you fly RC planes via FPV then you'll know how important good video antennas are to success.

Simon from the UK sent me one of the 5-turn helical antennas he sells for 20 quid and, based on some secret flight-testing, it seems to work very well indeed.

I wish he'd protect the copper backplane and wire from oxidation -- but apart from that these helicals seem hard to fault.

Watch for an upcoming video where I compare a range of helicals from US$10 through to US$90 and see which offers best value and performance.

In this test I used 3 different antennas with exactly the same plane/video setup and flew similar routes with all 3 antennas one after the other.
From take-off to landing the results are quite clear and show the benefits of circular polarization.
The winning setup has a Skew-Planar Wheel antenna (http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1352583) for the receiver and a Cloverleaf antenna (http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1388264) for the transmitter.
