Epstein Becker Green Webinar - Presented by Valerie Butera

OSHA’s enforcement initiative targeting inpatient health care facilities and nursing homes is underway. On June 25, 2015, Dorothy Dougherty, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Labor for Safety and Health, issued an enforcement memorandum to federal OSHA offices and State Plans instructing OSHA compliance officers to target inpatient health care facilities and nursing homes for inspections. Inspections can begin immediately.

It is important to note that OSHA’s designation of the types of facilities that qualify as targets under this initiative is quite broad — everything from hospices to skilled nursing facilities are included. Basically, any type of inpatient health care facility or nursing home that provides residential or inpatient service is at risk.

In this session - Part II of a series - Epstein Becker Green attorney Valerie Butera will highlight important and impactful areas of OSHA’s enforcement initiative now that the memorandum is released and available. Specifically, the webinar will review the following:

* Identification of the expansive range of inpatient care facilities that OSHA is targeting
* The seven health and safety hazards that OSHA plans to focus...

I usually don't post new videos, but this video from Federal OSHA for healthcare settings needs to be widely viewed by healthcare employers and workers. The video explains the proper use of respirators and the procedures to follow to assure that respirators protect workers from airborne hazards in healthcare settings. This 33-minute video explains the major components of a respiratory protection program including fit-testing, medical evaluations, training, and maintenance. The video also discusses the difference between respirators and surgical masks, and features a segment on common respiratory hazards found in healthcare settings, including airborne infectious agents that cause diseases such as tuberculosis, pandemic influenza, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), chicken pox, and measles. Demonstrations also show how respirator use helps protect workers from exposure to airborne chemical hazards such as formaldehyde and glutaraldehyde, which are used commonly in hospital laboratories to preserve tissue samples for medical analysis. These toxic substances can cause eye and nasal irritation, headaches, asthma, and other symptoms. Additionally, formaldehyde is a carcinogen and has been linked to nasal and lung cancer, with possible links to brain cancer and leukemia....

In the 1980s, 17,000 healthcare workers used to contract and literally a planeload (300) of healthcare workers died one at a time essentially in silence every year from hepatitis B. The nickname for Hepatitis B during this era was the "healthcare workers" disease. Once there was a vaccine, most healthcare employers still refused to buy the vaccine due the cost ($130). It wasn't until after Labor Unions pushed for a Joint CDC/NIOSH/OSHA Alert in the late 1980s followed by a 5 year campaign resulting in a final OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Standard (BBP) in 1991 - that required employers to provide the vaccine free of charge - that cases started to plummet. The incidence of occupational hepatitis B infections declined dramatically, from more than 17,000 cases in 1983, before the availability of the vaccine, to 400 in 1995 — a 95% decline and an amazing example of an OSHA success. The protection of healthcare workers from exposures to bloodborne pathogens, a life-threatening occupational risk in healthcare settings, was tragically neglected in the pre-AIDS era. Such exposures, particularly to hepatitis B, long exacted a deadly toll among healthcare workers worldwide. But it was not until the global AIDS epidemic captured the attention of the healthcare community...

Epstein Becker Green Webinar - Presented by Valerie Butera

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has heightened its enforcement efforts to levels never seen before. Recently, OSHA announced that the entire health care industry is in its crosshairs and enforcement actions against the industry will begin very soon.

The health care industry has one of the highest rates of work-related illnesses and injuries in the country and, for that reason, the agency will soon issue updated guidance that instructs OSHA offices to allocate enforcement and other resources to inpatient health care facilities, such as nursing homes and hospitals that have occupational illness and injury rates above the industry average.

Epstein Becker Green attorney Valerie Butera will present a webinar briefing on how health care employers can best prepare for and manage an OSHA inspection. Specifically, the webinar will review:

* The five health and safety hazards that OSHA intends to focus on when inspecting health care facilities
* The steps that health care employers should take before OSHA begins an inspection
* Health care employers' and employees' workplace inspection rights
* The stages of OSHA inspections
* Tips...

Well, I would have finished the rest of this OSHA safety class today (WHICH HAD ALMOST NOTHING TO DO WITH WHAT I WOULD BE DOING ON THE JOB) and went to work, but thanks to my crappy health (pun intended), I.B.S, which is severely painful at times, and not a fun thing to live or deal with, I wasn't able to complete it today and take my test. I really needed this job, I may see if they will let me go ahead and take the test so I can get my "safety card", but that is going to be a slim chance they'll allow me to do that, oh well, anyways, thanks for watching.

Safety in the workplace is important for all employees. OSHA, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, is a federal agency whose main objective is to ensure and promote a safe work environment for employees. This training will go over the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the elements of a claim, OSHA standards, prevention of injuries, workplace safety programs, and how to enforce the OSH Act.

One of the most important responsibilities employers have to their employees is to provide safe workplaces. This course focuses on the Occupational Safety and Health Act, including its requirements for employers and the manner in which the law is enforced. In the event that workers are hurt on the job, state workers’ compensation laws come into play and provide remedies to injured employees. Although workers’ compensation statutes are among the very oldest employment laws, they continue to generate legal questions about when employees are entitled, or limited, to workers’ compensation benefits. This course will help employers, supervisors, workers, health and safety committee members, and safety and health personnel in their efforts toward achieving compliance with OSHA standards in the workplace.
