If you've ever seen a group of starlings in flight, you've appreciated one of nature's most hypnotic sights -- the lava-lamp-like flow of a murmuration. SciShow explains the biology and mathematics behind this beautiful phenomenon.

Here are some magical murmurations of starlings! Avoiding and confusing prey with safety in numbers, these birds flock together in thousands every winter. Mostly, but not exclusively near water and reed beds or trees seem to be their roosting of choice.
Actually, (I know nothing John Snow!) a year ago I'd never heard of the word murmuration! However, a photographer buddy put me right on that score. So we went over to RSPB Otmoor's nature reserve and I was in awe of the spectacle and of course, its photographic potential!
That was December 2016! So this December over we went again and this time, (apart from taking a few stills) I decided to major on shooting video. The displays obviously are not always spectacular, so perseverance is essential. In January 2018, I made 5 more trips often in sub zero temperatures to capture the 15 minutes or so of action, that occurs just before dusk.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy the results?
Music by Demi Gods (AKA) Gary Harper who I cajoled into scoring the music!

The most spectacular Starling Murmuration I have ever seen.

The soundtrack is called Peace of Mind by Kevin Macleod http://incompetech.com/
Filmed on 13th November 2012 at Marazion in Cornwall
During autumn, dark clouds begin to form in the sky above fields, woodlands and reedbeds. But these are no ordinary clouds. They are one of the UK's most incredible wildlife spectacles.
Throughout the autumn and winter months, hundreds of thousands of starlings turn the sky black around the UK. The birds come together in huge clouds, wheeling, turning and swooping in unison.
Early evening, just before dusk, is the best time to see them across the UK as they perform their aerial dance and choose their communal night-time shelter. They roost in places that are sheltered from harsh weather and predators.
They tend to roost in woodlands, but reedbeds, cliffs, buildings and industrial structures are also used. During the day, however, they form daytime roosts at exposed places such as treetops, where the birds have good all-round visibility.
Autumn murmurations usually begin to form in November, though this varies from site to site and some can begin as early as...

The flight of starlings, a hypnotic acrobatic display of swooping and diving in unison and then landing which is simply breathtaking to witness. How they fly murmurations and flocks without colliding is a closely guarded secret by the Starlings them selves, but adds to the magic of the spectacle.
Filmed at Boultham Mere nature reserve on Saturday 11 March 2017.

These starling murmurations were filmed recently by Val & Al (avalonprints.uk.com) at RSPB Ham Wall nature reserve. The starlings migrate from Eastern Europe and join us here on the Somerset Levels during late Autumn, with their numbers gradually building through November and December. Ultimate numbers of birds vary year by year, this year (2016-17) we estimate there are some 2 million starlings roosting here. Normally the birds change their chosen roost site every few weeks, sometimes sleeping in the reed beds at Natural England’s Shapwick Heath reserve or as now, at Ham Wall. For some reason this year birds have behaved differently and have so far remained at Ham Wall. The Starlings will leave us in mid March to return home to breed, so you still have plenty of time to see them before then. Evenings offer the best opportunities for viewing the birds but the dawn “explosion” as the birds go off in different directions to feed is also very dramatic. The birds meet at their roost site around sunset, so if you are planning a visit you should try to be at your chosen viewing position at least 20 minutes before then, as the starlings will arrive early if the evening is dull. The RSPB starling hotline will tell you the latest known roosting location. If you are...

You may have watched this video before but now it has the first part of the sound track from our DVD, with original music by our great friend Denny Bridges, who is a musician and lives in the USA.
So as before, this is for you if you have visited the starling roosts at Ham Wall and Shapwick in Somerset hoping to see stunning starling murmurations and missed them. We've put together a short video clip from our HD DVD "Amazing Somerset Starling Murmurations" The short sequences of these wonderful murmurations are taken at various places in the video just to give a flavour of the whole piece. The complete sequence is about 16 minutes long. It is filmed in HD and in quite a beautiful setting. It is the longest and best continuous sequence of starling murmurations we have ever seen. It was filmed on the Somerset Levels, looking South West over Shapwick Heath, the day before the starlings departed in the Spring. We feel it was their farewell salute to a privileged few of us who had been following them all winter! The full DVD is now available from Somerset Crafts and will soon be available from our website. Watch for the Peregrine at 0:33 diving into the flock and listen for the Bittern at 1:25.

5 million starlings stream into Rome every winter evening. They form some of the most mesmeric aerial displays to confuse and avoid a peregrine falcon on the look out for his evening meal.

We know a lot of factual information about the starling—its size and voice, where it lives, how it breeds and migrates—but what remains a mystery is how it flies in murmurations, or flocks, without colliding. This short film by Jan van IJken was shot in the Netherlands, and it captures the birds gathering at dusk, just about to start their "performance." Listen well and you'll be able to hear how this beautiful phenomenon got its name.

During late autumn, when winter is just round the corner, there comes a time of the year when flocks of starlings create incredible aerobatic displays, swirling through the sky in magnificent ballets that almost seem choreographed. This dazzling display of avian behavior is known as a murmuration, a word that perfectly describes the rustle of thousands of pairs of wings. It is one of the most spectacular displays in the natural world as the flock changes shape, looking like a colossal wisp of smoke one minute , the next a tornado, the next a thundercloud blocking the light. The collective dance of the birds is truly a sight to behold.

Watch and listen to the murmurations of around 100,000 starlings coming in to roost at RSPB Otmoor in Oxford, England. This spectacle happens every winter from November until February.
Turn your audio on to hear how loud the starling chatter gets, as more and more birds come down to roost towards the end of the video.
Recorded Saturday 17 November 2018 between 16:00 and 16:30 as the light faded and the last of the starlings came in to roost for the night.
To see the murmurations you need to be at the viewing area for approximately an hour before sunset. It's about a 20 minute walk from the carpark - which can get pretty busy on days when the weather is good.
The path can also get quite muddy when there has been a lot of rain, so it is advisable to wear good waterproof footwear, and warm clothing as you will be standing still for some time. A torch might also be a good idea to take, as it will be dark when you leave if you stay to see the last of the birds arrive.
