The great auk (Pinguinus impennis) was a flightless bird of the alcid family that became extinct in the mid-19th century.
It was the only modern species in the genus Pinguinus (unrelated to penguins, although it was the first bird to be called penguin). The great auk was generally an excellent swimmer, using its wings to propel itself underwater.
It bred on rocky, isolated islands with easy access to the ocean and a plentiful food supply, a rarity in nature that provided only a few breeding sites for the auks.
It was found in the cold North Atlantic coastal waters along the coasts of Canada, the northeastern United States, Norway, Greenland, Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Ireland, Great Britain, France, and the Iberian Peninsula.
It left the North Atlantic waters for land only to breed, even roosting at sea when not breeding.
The great auk was 75 to 85 centimetres (30 to 33 in) tall and weighed around 5 kilograms (11 lb), making it the second-largest member of the alcid family (Miomancalla was larger).
It was an important part of many Native American cultures, both as a food source and as a symbolic item. Many Maritime Archaic people were buried with great auk bones, and one was buried covered in over 200 auk beaks.
The bird's down was in...

10. Hunters most likely eliminated the elephant bird. These were enormous birds that had trouble with flying and were found mostly on the isolated island of Madagascar. When they were left to themselves, they lived in virtual bliss and laid their eggs out in the open. But with that, they were easy prey for dinner. Man and other predators hunted them down, eating both the birds and their eggs. They went extinct within the last 1,000 years. Recently an elephant bird’s footlong egg, with a diameter of nearly 9 inches, was auctioned off for just over $100,000. It was intact and contained the skeletal remains of the unborn bird.

9.The Great Auk was another one of those flightless birds that died out in the mid-1800s. They were about 30 inches tall with short wings that helped them swim under water. And they were known as being utterly defenseless. They were killed by hunters for food and bait. They were also captured by sailors who often slaughtered them while moving them into a ship’s holding areas. The last of the Great Auks was seen in England when it was caught by three men. They tied it up and kept it alive for three days, but when a big storm hit the area, they were convinced the auk was a witch that...

Near the end of the video, Eldey island is visible on the horizon. A lighthouse is seen at the beginning of the video. The last of the Great Auks, a flightless bird, died on Eldey island. Not far from here is Gunnuhver hot springs, as well as a foot bridge spanning over the crack between the tectonic plates. The rift valley, which courses through the Atlantic ocean floor, travels through Iceland from the Southwest to the Northeast. Eldey island can be seen on the horizon about 7 seconds before the end, but it is just a small grayish square. From Iceland.

These are two tracks (which run together) from the album 'Titanium Flag', by Colin Harper, which includes a suite of instrumental pieces inspired by two books on Arctic travel/history by Joanna Kavenna and Gavin Francis.

These are 'imagined' Great Auks - the species was last recorded on the Island of Eldey, off Iceland, in 1844. Errol Fuller - glimpsed amid the stuffed auks in the montage - has written several books on extinct birds, including volumes on the Great Auk and the Dodo. All are highly recommended.

Musicians on these tracks are: Colin Harper (guitars), Rachelle Stewart (clarinet), Alan McClure (violins), Cormac O'Kane (piano), Jim Cuthbertson (drums)

The album is available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/ColinHarper

Short video of before and after new varnish. This boat is about 24 years old. It has had occasional touchups and repairs to the varnish and fiberglass/epoxy, but this was the first time its had a full fresh varnish job since it was new.

Florida Keys Wooden Boat Fishing, Me and my stuff:
My Boats:
The original single seater Kayak is a Great Auk designed by Nick Shade of Guillemot Kayaks and built by me with my own two hands. It’s 16 1/2 feet long (the design is 17 feet, but I scaled it to fit in the garage I built it in) and 24 inches wide. This was the first boat I ever built.

“Tiny” the double kayak is another Nick Shade design (Micro Bootlegger) and was also built by me. Videos of the later parts of the build are on my channel for your perusal (don’t forget to like and comment). It’s 18 feet long and 28 inches wide, for a stable and roomy ride, even with a bunch of fishing stuff riding along with me (or a second person).

My “Three Week Canoe” was, once again, built by yours truly, and you can see the entire build in my award winning video series “The Three Week Strip Canoe Build”. Available on a computer screen near you. The design is the classic “Puddle Duck” by Gil Gilpatrick.

Many scientists have considered the possibility of bringing animals back from extinction through a process called “de-extinction.” In choosing animals to “de-extinct,” scientists consider certain factors such as their ecological functions and easy access to tissues that could give them quality DNA samples. Though they have already identified a good number of extinct animals that they could bring back to life, the process of bringing them back still has a long way to go as de-extinction entails hundreds of millions of dollars. Here is a list of 25 extinct animals that scientists want to de-extinct:

If you’ve been a fan of TopTenz.net for awhile, you’re obviously familiar with our format. Heck, it’s right there in the name, after all. But we’ve heard some of your requests, particularly over on our YouTube channel, asking for a few shorter lists now and then. We listened, and last week we introduced a new series called Fast Five (editor’s note: Vin Diesel still not included).

Few things in life, except maybe watching a cookie break in half and slowly sink to the bottom of a glass of milk, are more saddening than an animal going extinct. Here’s a list of 5 animals that not only went extinct, but did so in such a ridiculous manner it’s almost like the universe went out of its way to screw them over, starting with…

5. The Tecopa Pupfish
4. The Great Auk
3. The Tasmanian Tiger
2. The Cordoba Fighting Dog
1. The Stephen Island Wren
