Episode 54 - When the TurboGrafx-16 and Sega Genesis were both launched in the late summer and fall of 1989, neither was able to supplant the Nintendo Entertainment System at the top of the North American Home gaming market, and as a result their only real competition was each other. Both systems had some great games in their respective launch line-ups, with the TurboGrafx-16 probably having the edge. But by the end of 1989 both systems would have a quite a few quality titles available, making either system a reasonable choice for gamers looking to dabble in next-gen hardware. Highlights of the TuboGrafx library by the end of the year include Blazing Lazers, The Legendary Axe, Dungeon Explorer, R-Type, Galaga 90, Fantasy Zone, and Monster Lair. The TurboGrafx-16 also became the first home console to support games on CD-ROM when the TurboGrafx CD was released in November.

Show Notes:

- No matter how I chose to pronounce "Galaga" in this episode, I was going to have people leaving comments to "correct" me. Such is the case with YouTube, sometimes.

Remember the warming sounds of internet dial-up? Trying to get through to your internet provider, without an engaged tone. Trying to get a decent connection speed. Downloading GIFS, GIFS, GIFS. Well, thankfully we can still relive those past experiences thanks to a few ISPs who offer a dial up service. You can also grab a 56k modem cheap enough and even connect it up to your modern Windows 10 PC. So let's take a look at whether dial up is possible in 2017.

The Commodore 64, otherwise known as the C64, C-64 or CBM64... What can I say about this machine that hasn't already said. It's an amazing piece of kit which has stood the test of time admirably. In this video, I'll give you the background story of the beast, as well as my personal views, a hardware rundown, my software picks (along with some terrible gameplay) and tell you what's been happening in more recent times for the 30+ year old Commodore machine. Sit back, relax, and grab your joysticks *ahem*.

The Amstrad CPC Story begins way back in 1947, with the birth of Alan Michael Sugar. We then meander through Alan Sugar's early working career, the start of his trading business, AMS Trading, and then the formation of Amstrad. From there, between stereos and CB radios we land with the fabulous Amstrad CPC464 in 1984. A machine often cast aside as an "also ran", but in reality, anything but. Selling some 2 million machines, it comes in third place behind the Sinclair Spectrum and Commodore 64, but dominated in parts of Europe. So, let us delve in to the Amstrad and Amstrad CPC story concentrating mainly on the early days of Amstrad and the launch of the Amstrad CPC464 Home Computer...

Everyone knows the Sega Dreamcast was something special. But not everyone knows WHY. There have been many generations of gamers who never played ANY Sega console, let alone the last one. So to pay tribute to everything SEGA was, here's what it was like to be there for Sega's glorious dying breath.

Special thanks to The Dreamcast Junkyard for being an awesome site that I've read for over 10 years, to Sega Retro for being an invaluable resource, to Tickeroo for letting me use their PSO footage from 2001, to Tom Waterhouse for the original title card art (I used it as desktop wallpaper back in 2007!), and to Benjamin Woodring for sponsoring a Dreamcast retrospective way back in 2015! I hope it was worth the wait!

Oh, and a HUGE thanks to the combined suggestions of @pyrrhickong on Twitter and my bird woman Alisha, for saving the PS2 rant near the end!

Well, ok, not EVERYONE is angry, but most are, and I think it's down to the principle of the matter more than anything else. So, Sony have recently launched their Playstation Classic Mini console, and it's not unfair to say that reception has been cold. That's not to say that it's a total pile of crap, and you can have a lot of fun with it. But looking through the firmware source code, it's clear there were games on Sony's agenda, which may have made it into the Classic, but didn't. These hidden Playstation classic games will feature in this video, along with the reasons why I think we can be annoyed with Sony over their latest console (and why we also shouldn't really give a crap).

Mystery eBay boxes. They're a thing. Well how about a mystery eBay beige PC BOX? Now, that's what I'm talking about. This is a 1990s IBM PC Compatible, I purchased from eBay for £56. It contains an AMD K5 Processor, 64MB of RAM, Trident video card and many, many delights on its 270MB HDD. In fact, some of these delights are probably best left hidden, if you catch my drift. So let's explore and unearth the shocking contents of this retro PC.

What? Sony made a PS2 TV? A television with a built in Playstation? Yes, that's right, following in the footsteps of the SNES, NES and even Dreamcast televisions, we have a Sony Bravia LCD TV, with a Playstation 2 slapped onto it's base. Otherwise known as the KDL-22PX300 I thought it was time to take a closer look at this UK exclusive. Internally it's wired up with component connections, so we can also enjoy some HDMI like resolutions. What great times.

Firstly... the "Switch" in the title isn't a Nintendo reference, no matter how much I wanted it to be. No, I'm afraid this is firmly about Xbox vs PS4, Xbox vs. Playstation... it's a battle of the ages. I've owned an Xbox since they first appeared. For me, the original Xbox arrived at the right time; a time when I was looking for a casual gaming platform. From there, I've stuck with them for my "current generation" needs. But recently, something has been upsetting me (likely just my lack of tolerance, or sheer stupidity), and I wanted to see if the competition had the same issue. This video is therefore about my life as an Xbox Fanboy (apologies for that phrase), and how I've seen a new light, a light that resembles a floating P in the sky.... Sony Playstation.

For those who can't be arsed with all the click bait titles, it's about the Xbox Dashboard evolution, or devolution in my eyes. Has the Xbox dashboard devolved?

Street Fighter 2 Turbo for the Sega Genesis/MegaDrive. It's not a title you usually associate with Sega's 16 bit games machine. After all, Street Fighter II Turbo was released exclusively on the SNES, in terms of 16 bit consoles. So what is Street Fighter 2 Turbo Beta on the Genesis/Megadrive? Well, it's a ROM which emerged in 1994 and has been roaming about since then. Nobody really seems to know how it fits into the Street Fighter 2 timeline, especially in regard to Streetfighter 2 Special Champion Edition, which was the game actually to come out on Sega's hardware. So, is this "Turbo Beta" just an early version of the Special Champion Edition, or an altogether different title, developed by a completely different team. Well, join me and we'll find out how deep this rabbit hole goes.

Every so often we get a news story about the continued success of the Sega Master System and Mega Drive in Brazil - usually on the release of another new Master System. Sega lives forever over there! Why is that? How do these machines hold their own against the likes of the PS4? What makes Brazil such a unique video game market? This video, with the help of a look at the company that makes it all possible as well as games exclusive to the country, hopes to answer that. Enjoy!

Gameboy Advance vs. Super Nintendo... is the GBA just a Super Nintendo in smaller form? Did Nintendo simply repackage their 11 year old hardware into their latest handheld in order to get a cheap, quick and easy to develop portable gaming device out to the masses, or is there something different going on under the plastic GBA casing? Is the hardware much more than we originally realised? Is it capable of things we can now only dream of?... Well, I won't be answering all of these specific questions, but I will answer the question on whether the Gameboy Advance is just a SNES in different clothing, and the reasons behind whatever the outcome of that question are. Join me for another epsiode of Byte Size.

Yes, its a full size HDMI Sega Genesis / MegaDrive. It's from China and it's actually pretty good. So I decided what else this Eastern clone could do other than play games. First we'll compare the HDMI picture from this console to the original Mega Drive, then we'll get down and dirty with some peripherals such as the 32X, Mega CD and even the Sega Menacer.

We also take a walk down the Megadrive/Genesis RGB route to find the best picture setup for Sega's 16 bit machine of envy. It's pretty impressive what the original Mega Drive can do in terms of image output... although its standard composite output is nothing to be desired.

So join me, the HD MegaDrive (or the HD Sega Genesis if you prefer), and a bunch of accessories, for the ultimate in comparisons and showdowns.

The original Xbox was a luge lump of intimidating plastic. It's shadowy bulk entertained us for many years, but also scared quite a few of us. What is NTSC? What is PAL? Why in Sonic fast in America? Why is he slow in Europe? Perhaps the question should be more like Why is 60hz faster than 50hz?... and why is there a difference? Because that's exactly what this video is about. Back in the days of analogue television (you remember that, right?), signals were transmitted using 2 main standards, PAL and NTSC (There's also SECAM for France and Russia, which is similar to PAL), and to display on these standards, your equipment needed to be able to output the right signal type. *OPEN FOR MORE*

This is partly why a Sega Genesis won't work properly in the UK without modifications and vice versa. This video looks at the whole caboodle, what NTSC is, what PAL is, why we have 60hz and 50hz, where it came from, who came up with those figures and exactly what all this means when it comes to Sonic the Hedgehog.

By the way, PAL stands for Phase Altering Line. NTSC stands for National Television Standards Committee; the people who came up with the name. I always prefer it when acronyms refer to the technology rather than the people who decided on the specification.

Please note. The Megadrive 68000 CPU clock speed is actually 7.600489 MHz, hence why that calculation doesn't quite pan...

Atari Games, were literally the creators of Atari Games, in the guise of Atari arcade games. You see, back in the 70s, Atari was one company, but as we get to the mid 80s, it's ownership split. The consumer division was bought by Jack Tramiel (of Commodore fame), whilst the arcade games division went in a separate direction. Last week we explored the consumer division of Atari, whilst this week's video game documentary is looking at the arcade division, Atari Games.

Intel vs AMD? Forget it. The processor wars of the 90s are almost as legendary as Sega vs. Nintendo or Amiga vs. Atari. While Intel was improving the 386 and 486, competitors popped up like AMD and Cyrix, leaving Intel with a lot more competition on their hands than today, and various lawsuits followed along the way. These companies were dedicated to overtaking Intel in the processor race, and when Intel jumped to the Pentium, Cyrix and AMD weren't far behind with 5x86 and 6x86 processor iterations (AMD with their K6). This video will explore the whole Cyrix story, from their setup to their unfortunate demise. Along the way I'll ask the important question; Did Quake kill off Cyrix? Was it the undoing of an entire processor designer?.... It's a question which has basis in the Cyrix 686 processor's poor FPU performance and John Carmack's coding which leaned heavily on Intel FPU design. But it might not be the only reason why this silicon chip designer bit the bullet. This is an era where it wasn't just Intel vs AMD, or a simple price vs performance war. This was an era of Intel vs AMD vs Cyrix vs IDT, and for me, having lived through it, it's absolutely fascinating.

Sit back and witness glorious CPUs like the Cyrix 5x86, the 6x86, the...

The Sega Mega Drive, otherwise known as the Sega Genesis is a popular console. It came in various iterations such as the Mega Drive II, the Multi Mega and even clones. But what in the name of almighty glory is the Media Mega Drive? Well, I didn't know either, so I took a look and then went on quest to find it's origin and it's journey, so I could lay to rest the story of this "rare" console... The Media Mega Drive.

Is it a console knock off? Console rip off? A Mega Drive in disguise? A Chinese Mega Drive? Well I can tell you for certain that it's not a Chinese console, and it was made in a time before Aliexpress even existed. So delve in to find out.

Episode 204 - We finally take a look at Sega's original portable system designed to take on the GameBoy. It's a curious little system that didn't quite reach the same levels of success but still has some fun stuff!

Why The Sega Mega CD / Sega CD Failed | Nostalgia Nerd

The Sega Mega CD, or Sega CD as it's known in the USA was an upgrade/add-on for the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis which offered CD-ROM capability. Incorporating an additional Motorola 68000 chip, increased memory, and custom graphics and sound processing, the Mega CD was poised to be a massive leap forward in technology for existing Mega Drive owners. However, the additional components meant the unit was simply priced to high for most casual gamers. This, coupled with the delayed launch in Western regions, meant that people simply "made-do" with their existing hardware or waited until something better came along (and I don't mean the 32X). This leaves the Mega CD as an obscure but hugely interesting side note of early-mid 90s technology, and could even be marked as the point where Sega began to falter in their business credentials. Join me in this system review to find out about the Sega CD's history, it's specifications, the games library and what happened at the end of it's short, but intense life.

Gaming Historian provides a history of the SEGA 32X. In an effort to stay ahead of the game, SEGA released the 32X in late 1994. It was an add-on that transformed the Genesis from 16-bit to 32-bit. SEGA pitched it as a cheaper alternative to the upcoming next-gen systems. But in less than a year, it was forgotten. The 32X damaged SEGA's reputation with developers and consumers. The Sega Genesis / Sega Mega Drive was the console which Sega first made waves (and green hills) with. Building on their Sega Master System, the Mega Drive heralded the dawn of Sega in the 16 bit home video game market. Going up against the NES, PC Engine (Turbografx 16 in the West) and of course, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, this is a story marked with highs and lows, with aggressive advertising (Genesis Does What Nintendon't) and with lots and lots of amazing games. This video charts the beginnings of the Mega Drive back in the early 80s, out of arcade hardware, to it's arrival in North America as the Sega Genesis, to it's dominance over Nintendo, Europe and even it's recent resurgence by TecToy in Brazil with their limited edition Mega Drive model. We also cover the Sega CD, the 32X and touch on a load of other accessories, rivals (Turografx 16, Super Nintendo) and rip offs, including the Scorpion; a Mega Drive clone released in the UK in 1993. There's also a load of Genesis games and Mega Drive games throughout, including the launch of Sonic the Hedgehog, all designed to hit you right in the nostalgia gland. This is a long'un, so hold on tight, and enjoy!
