Only 10 percent of CrossFit Games athletes say they weigh and measure their food, Chan notes in Part 1.

This time on The CrossFit Kitchen, Nick Massie of PaleoNick.com figures out the only way to make pizza better: using crispy bacon as the crust. This breakfast pizza takes bacon and eggs to a whole new level, and a side of broccoli brings balance to the dish.

Massie’s first step is to toss the veggies with a drizzle of olive oil and his own Veggie Victory spice blend. The broccoli florets then go on a sheet pan to roast in the oven while he builds the pizza. The next step is to fry up a thick layer of bacon in a heavy cast-iron skillet and crack 12 eggs on top.

“Now as a culinary ninja, you’ll be able to crack all of them without breaking the yolk,” Massie says.

Once the bacon crisps and the eggs set, he chops the pizza into eight slices and serves with a side of roasted broccoli.

Massie is now the instructor for the CrossFit Specialty Course Culinary Ninja, which is designed to give you confidence in the kitchen while you learn the basics of balanced recipe development as informed by CrossFit’s nutrition principles.

Combining the CrossFit training methodology with a diet of meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and no sugar brings "a jet stream of adaptation," says CrossFit founder Greg Glassman.

In the pyramid Glassman created, nutrition is the foundation, with met-cons, gymnastics, weightlifting and throwing, and sport following.

"Each level builds on the level below it," explains Nicole Carroll, director of certification. "If your nutrition sucks, these things will not be where they could be if it were more solid."

Likewise, Glassman says CrossFit favors Barry Sears' Zone Diet "because it does give me accurate and precise prescription for caloric intake and, more importantly, the exact levels of macronutrient that I can start at."

Likewise, trainers and coaches can make informed decisions on how to tweak an athlete's diet for improved performance, he says.

CrossFit HQ trainer Pat Sherwood says nutrition isn't an either/or aspect of training.

"It's not quality or quantity. It can and it should be both."

Andi Wilford was 25 years old when she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS), a degenerative neurological disease affecting muscle coordination.

Though she often struggled to walk—or even lift her head—Wilford worked for 25 years as a mental-health nurse. But when she retired, she worried inactivity would hasten the disease’s progression—a fear that seemed justified after she fell and fractured her wrist.

Wilford’s friend, whose grandson owns Stronger Together CrossFit, told her she should try CrossFit.

Though initially reluctant, Wilford decided to give it shot after learning of a member at the gym who also had MS.

“That was the key for me—that somebody else with this condition is doing something,” she says.

Coach Kimberley Gott recalls the time she told Wilford not to bring her walking stick into the gym anymore.

“This is gonna be a stick-free zone,” Gott said.

Wilford was taken aback at first, but now she’s grateful for the tough love.

“It’s phenomenal,” Wilford says. “It was magic. Before I started going to the gym to CrossFit, I was walking with a stick all the time. I’m using it less and less. … I can walk unaided.”

"How many carbs or how much fat I have in the meal is all based on the protein, and it's all going to be evenly divisible by whatever the protein," says Cherie Chan of CrossFit Verve, located in Denver, Colo.

In Part 1, Cherie and husband Matt prepare a chicken salad using Zone Diet principles to balance the protein, fat and carbohydrate.

Cherie starts with her protein: grilled chicken breasts. From there, she adds carbohydrate in the form of chopped peppers, celery and onions. For the dressing, she uses eggs (another protein), limes (carbohydrates), and mustard and curry powder for seasoning. She uses slivered almonds for the fat.

After the salad is assembled, Cherie measures the total amount to portion it equally and shows how she serves the dish as a complete meal.

In Part 2, the Chans share their nutrition tips for making a Paleo-Zone diet work.

"I can't recommend a food processor enough," Matt says as he makes short work of the vegetables they need for their meals.

They store the excess in the fridge to easily add carbohydrate blocks to any meal.

"We've both found that we both need a minimum of one block of vegetables in carbohydrates," Matt says of each...

Cecilia Larsson, 34, is a former competitive swimmer who used to spend all her free time in the pool. When she decided to further her education, swimming took a back seat. A sedentary lifestyle coupled with an affinity for candy and soda caused Larsson to gain weight.

Larsson eventually became prediabetic and depressed, and she found herself suffering from low self-confidence due to significant weight gain.

At CrossFit Näset in Höllviken, Sweden, everything changed.

After several months of CrossFit training, Larsson saw marked improvements in her physical and mental health, and she knew it was time to attack her diet. Under the guidance of coach Fredrik Ivehed, Larsson started the Zone Diet and hasn’t looked back.

“CrossFit and the Zone Diet have been a big barrier to cross over mentally—more mentally than physically,” she says.

Larsson cleared her mental hurdles, and at the time of filming she had lost 147 lb.

Chris Martirano goes grocery shopping every weekend. When he gets back, it's all about cooking for the week.

"I try to prepare all my food for the entire week. That way when I come home from the gym or from work, I don't have to worry about cooking anything or putting anything together," says the member of Patriot CrossFit in Arlington, Va.

In Part 1, Martirano takes you through what he cooks to follow the Zone Diet. He even finds time for working out between marinating his chicken and mashing his sweet potatoes.

"As everything is cooking I plan on doing a little bit of fun," he says. "By fun I mean some Tabata squats."

In Part 2, it's time for weighing and measuring breakfast, lunch and dinner.

"I have my handy scale all ready to portion my meals out," Martirano says.

He follows an 18-block plan, which plays out as five blocks for breakfast, four blocks for a mid-morning snack, four more blocks for an afternoon snack and five blocks for dinner.

"The day is done," Martirano says after portioning his food. "Rinse and repeat."

"So we're here in the Chan household, and we're at prep day," says Cherie Chan of CrossFit Verve, located in Denver, Colo. "We try to do this once a week when we have time to prep a bunch of meals or a bunch of food that will make it super easy for us to stick to what we do every day: Zone-Paleo foods."

Join Cherie and husband Matt for an inside scoop on their nutrition. Today they shop and begin preparation for their meals.

Cherie adds a great tip for fruit and vegetables: prep them right after you buy them.

"If I put these in the fridge the way that they are after buying them from the grocery store, what notoriously happens is I will waste about half of them because I wouldn't have had the time to chop them and prepare a meal," she says.
