The 20 Incher stonefly is a great pattern for mimicking large stonefly nymphs. If tied smaller it can also mimic baetis as well. Its just got everything that makes trout bite. Biot tails, ribbed peacock body, and active legs that move around like crazy. Just really one of the best stonefly patterns out there in my opinion.
So as always I am listing all the materials below, with links to where you can purchase them.

This easy Stonefly Pattern is perfect for imitating the Golden Stonefly Nymph before it hatches every year in most of my favorite trout streams. The Two Tone Golden Stone is easy to tie with very few materials. I often tie this stonefly nymph with a #6 or #4 bent shank hook. Weight is optional, but it helps to keep the fly down deep in the strike zone.
This is one of my favorite flies to use on the Colorado River west of Glenwood Springs, CO. It is a constant producer of big rainbows and browns for my customers. I am confident that I can impress you with the fishing in the Colorado Rockies. Theo Bakelaar, to this man we owe the catch of large numbers of fish, because it was the pioneer who brought the "gold beads" or "beads heads" to the fly tying world in the the eighties and early nineties.
I particularly remember that many "schools" recommended building nymphs without ballast, because they behaved more naturally in the water ... the Beads Heads came to break with that concept and the first reactions were of mistrust besides aesthetically were not accepted for many old school fly tiers. The truth is that trout voted for it with thousands of strikes !! And the gold beads or bead heads earned a privileged place in the fly boxes of millions of fishermen and today are an almost...

http://flytying123.com Trout feed on stonefly nymphs year round. This has been the best producing stonefly pattern I've fished. The hotspot collar along with the combination of durable materials formed in the outline of a stonefly are a proven success.
This fly was in the R&D stages for over four years before I was finally content with the final product. I've been fishing it successfully in both the dark variation, and the golden stone. I typically fish it in a size 6. For deep swift currents I fish this fly with a heavy tungsten bead. If I find myself on a small stream where stoneflies are found to be the food source of choice I fish it with a brass bead. My box is never void of both the tungsten version, and the brass.

Weigth: lead wire o lead tape, optional.
Under body: mono nylon, same diameter of the hook wire.
Tail and antennae: goose biots.
Abdomen: hare tron dubbing and angora goat dubbing, mix in equal parts.
Rib: vinil rib, larva lace o swannundaze.
Wing cases: sections of turkey tail feathers, lacquered.
Torax / head: same abdomen.
Note: for made the Kaufmann Stone I prefer use a “coipo” dubbing, the coipo is a patagonian otter. It has a spectacular fur with guard hairs that allow amazing effects in large nymphs. Dyed or natural to contrast guard hairs and coat achieves a great look.
Black, browns and grays are the best colors.
This fly created by Randall Kaufmann is for me one of the best examples of balance between realism and impressionism in a copycat fly, no element in its design removes feeling of life and texture and provide a very good aspect of realism.
Since its appearance was the archetype imitator stone fly nymph and in my case in particular made a great impression and represent a great influence on the concept of what should be a fly for fishing.

My first fly-tying video. A fly of my own design. Not my best rendition of this fly, it was a bit awkward with the way I had the camera set up so I wasn't tying as comfortably as I would have liked. This fly can be tied in a variety of sizes. I think this was a size 10 curved shank nymph hook. Lead wire to ballast the fly, black goose biots for the tail and legs, thin copper wire for the tail ribbing, black cat hair for dubbing, peacock herl around the thorax to build up the body, and tan scud skin for the thorax shell back. I also make a slight variation to this fly with front antennae just using black dog hair as it is quite stout and makes for a good copy of the real thing.

This may be one of my last fly tying videos for awhile... it's time for fresh fishing videos! I thought it would be a relevant fly with late winter stonefly activity popping in many steelhead streams. This is my personal favorite stonefly nymph, it is the perfect balance of imitative and suggestive. My go-to fly for clear water steel.

A Simple Stonefly Pattern so effective and easy to tie, it should be illegal. This fly is very realistic and because Stonefly Nymphs are in the river year round, trout bite them on sight. I like to tie it with a #8 or #6 hook with a bent shank. This nymph pattern is weighted with lead wire and I use variegated spandex rubber for the tail, legs and antenna.
Tying stoneflies is only half the story. My customers catch many big fish with stonefly nymphs like this one every day. If you would like to see just how well this realistic, simple stonefly pattern works for the trout in Colorado, go to http://www.riplips.com for information and booking. Thanks for watching - MT

Stone Cooper Leg (Ruben Martin) - www.rubenmartin.com.ar
Stonefly nymphs (Order Plecoptera) are of a wide variety of sizes and are usually common those of medium and large sizes. An interesting fact is that in studies of food availability and food eaten by the trout is not uncommon to determine a preference in this order. An important aspect of this order is to prefer the stones or logs of good running rivers and large water oxygenation, their larvae are not good swimmers and being detached from the place to which are attached at the bottom often maintain a rigid position while resulting in the current until they are deposited on the bottom if you do not end up in the jaws of a fish on the way, during the drift usually in an upright position or curved, statically and in many cases with belly up . I think when it comes to imitating nymphs Stone are two very important aspects, one is that imitation achieved quickly get to the bottom and stay in that area of flow, and the second is that imitations must have a high degree of realism. This type of flies often have negative side that have a texture too hard, which makes fish the retain very little time before expel, but this aspect is offset by the large number of strikes that we get, in these situations we must have...

Stone Fly Nymph Version
It is known that the stonefly nymphs are an irresistible for most trout that have at their disposal bite. Imitation presented here has a good balance between realism and impressionism, this makes an excellent fly for fishing! ... In drift, or picking it up gently by the fund in large pits or on veriles of a lake.
We can tie this fly in other hooks classic format for nymphs, I personally really like this model TMC 2302, at numbers 8 and 6 is one of the best nymphs for many rivers in northern Patagonia and mainly for Caleufu rivers, Chimehuin and Collon Cura.
In sizes of hooks that are very small we can replace the under body with a piece of monofilament to each side of the shank of the hook, and we can use instead of dubbing mohair wool or just a very thin acrylic wool.
