While most gear mechanisms are decades and even centuries old, the Eccentrically Cycloidal gear drive is so new the ink is still not dry on its patents. This video is published with the explicit permission of the patent holder.
This futuristically-looking mechanism is very efficient and extremely compact. The gear pair shown here has the gear ratio of 1:9, an almost impossible feat for a traditional involute gear pair.

Harmonic Hyperdrive is a gearing contraption that achieves a 300 to 1 gearing ratio. It is a combination of a strain wave gear, also known as harmonic drive, and the Grinder Gears. The mechanism has two sets of cycloid drives, one with a gearing ratio of 26 to 24, and the other 25 to 23. The resulting gearing ratio is 25x24/2=300 to 1.
Harmonic drives are best known for their high accuracy, not any slack or backlash, and high reduction ratios. The reduction ratio of a Harmonic Hyperdrive is proportional to the square of the reduction ratio of the equivalent harmonic drive. So it can achieve even higher gearing ratios while keeping the number of gear teeth limited, and the size of the teeth not too small.
After seeing this video, Dr. Ingolf Schäfer of Harmonic Drive AG told Oskar that they had conceived a similar (same?) concept in the 1990's. However, only some lousy sketches are left. The reason that Harmonic Drive never pursued this concept that there was no market for gear drives with such extreme reduction ratios.

Voith Schneider, otherwise known as cycloidal drive systems are often used on vessels that require a high degree of manoeuvrability, particularly at slow speed. These include tugs, fireboats and workboats. Vertically mounted hydrofoil blades are mounted on a rotating plate. The blades are linked to a control system which automatically alters their angle of attack as they rotate to provide thrust in the direction selected. The system is highly efficient and can change the direction of thrust almost instantaneously in any direction. They are often used in pairs, so a vessel is able to spin on its own axis or move sideways if needed.

Test of a proof of principle model of a cycloidal speed reducer. Also known as a wabble drive. This model has a twenty to one gear reduction. In a hypocycloid (or simply cycloid) speed reducer, a flower-shaped gear called cycloid disk moves around a stationary ring of round pins in a cycloidal motion, driven by an eccentric bearing or cam connected to the input shaft. Radial holes on the face of the cycloid disk in turn drive the pins of the output shaft. Hypocycloid drives are widely used in the industry due to their excellent characteristics, such as wide range of gear ratios, compact size, smooth transmission, high efficiency, high overload capacity, low noise, long service life, and compact design.

A cycloidal drive or cycloidal speed reducer is a mechanism for reducing the speed of an input shaft by a certain ratio. Cycloidal speed reducers are capable of high ratios in compact sizes.
The input shaft drives an eccentric bearing that in turn drives the cycloidal disc in an eccentric, cycloidal motion. The perimeter of this disc is geared to a stationary ring gear and has a series of output shaft pins or rollers placed through the face of the disc. These output shaft pins directly drive the output shaft as the cycloidal disc rotates. The radial motion of the disc is not translated to the output shaft.

Voith Schneider propeller (VSP), also known as a cycloidal drive is a specialized marine propulsion system. It is highly maneuverable, being able to change the direction of its thrust almost instantaneously. It is widely used on tugs and ferries. From a circular plate, rotating around a vertical axis, a circular array of vertical blades (in the shape of hydrofoils) protrudes out of the bottom of the ship. Each blade can rotate itself around a vertical axis.
