In which John Green teaches you about the fall of the Roman Empire, which happened considerably later than you may have been told. While the Western Roman Empire fell to barbarians in 476 CE, the Byzantines in Constantinople continued the Eastern Empire nicely, calling themselves Romans for a further 1000 years. Find out what Justinian and the rest of the Byzantine emperors were up to over there, and how the Roman Empire dragged out its famous Decline well into medieval times. In addition to all this, you'll learn about ancient sports riots and hipster barbarians, too.

I was asked to build the enchanted rose used in a play put on by our local theater works organization. I was told petals must fall at least 4 specific points (cues) and that it had to be as magical as possible. The hardest part was doing it on the budget of $50 I was going to be given. I knew right away that wasn't going to cut it, so I made this a personal project and wound up getting it built for just under $90, this is everything excluding the radio. I did purchase two identical roses, one of which was held by the enchantress, and the other for the falling petal one so that they both looked somewhat similar. I have not decided what to do with it yet, but most of the theater folks I've been working with highly suggested to rent it out. At any rate, I had a lot of fun designing and building this, and am thinking about doing a couple more to sell. Thanks for your interest and watching!

Heading to Europe & Not Sure What to Pack? Here are a few things that my fellow US travelers may want to avoid packing if they are traveling to Europe.
1. Baseball Caps: Europeans in general do not wear baseball caps, especially backwards. You would be better served to wear a more traditional hat. You will see an occasional NY Yankee hat, but why not buy the fancy hat you always wanted instead?
2. Athletic Wear: Europeans tend to wear athletic wear to do sports, not to wear around town. There is a trend of more athleisurewear in Europe, but it is not to the extent that there is in US.
3. Khakis: the omnipresent US male pant choice is not something you will see too often in Europe. Go for colored pants or jeans. If you want khaki like pants wear Chinos instead of Dockers. The pants you will see are a thinner cut or "skinnier" fit than in the US.
4. Oversized US University Sweatshirts.
5. Sport Shoes or High Heals: US sport shoes and white socks are not quite as popular in Europe as they are in the US. You...

What is the Feast of Weeks (Shavuot or Pentecost), and what is its significance?
The Feast of Weeks is a spring harvest festival following Passover. It begins with the the waving of a single sheaf of the FirstFruits on the day after the Sabbath. Then seven weeks are counted leading up to the culmination on the 50th day, the day after the 7th Sabbath.
The Feast of weeks marks the conclusion of the Counting of 7 weeks and is known by several different names in the Bibe. In Hebrew, it's called Shavuot, which means weeks, and refers to the counting of 7 weeks. In Greek, it's called Pentecost, which means 50, and refers to the 50 days of counting. It is also called the Festival of Reaping and Day of the First Fruits because it is a spring harvest festival.
However, calling it FirstFuits seems a bit confusing since the day beginning the count is also called FirstFruits. On the first day a single sheaf is waved to begin the grain harvest, and at the end of 7 weeks a celebration takes place with it is the day when the FirstFruits wave offering is made. So, why are both the beginning and the end called FirstFruits?
In ancient times, the grain harvest lasted seven weeks. It began with the harvesting of barley at Passover and ended with...

Ahh, so many gods....and so little time. How do you worship and appease all of them? And WHERE? The answer to that question leads us up to the massive bronze doors of Rome's oldest building -- a temple whose design has been admired and studied for over 1800 years. The Pantheon.
I'm here at one of the most remarkable engineering marvels in all of ancient Rome, the Pantheon. But before we go any further, let's get a little terminology straight.
In Athens, there's a famous temple on top of the Acropolis, the very symbol of Athens, called "The Parthenon." But the building we're looking at today, perhaps the most well-preserved ancient building in the world is called "The Pantheon." Though they sound similar in name, their meanings are not similar at all. "Parthenos" is Greek for "virgin," hence the temple dedicated to the perpetual virgin goddess Athena was called the "Parthenon." The Pantheon, on the other hand, was named by combining the Greek word for "all" or "every" -- pan -- with the word for "god," theos. Therefore the "Pantheon" was originally dedicated to...

A Rome priest whose parish celebrates only the pre-Vatican II Tridentine Mass under Pope Benedict XVI's 2007 authorization for expanded use of Latin in the liturgy, talks to CNS about the enduring appeal of tradition to Catholics today. Father Joseph Kramer is a member of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter, established by Blessed John Paul II in 1988 to train priests for traditionalist followers of excommunicated Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre who wish to be reconciled with the Catholic Church. +J.M.J.+ The Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the great summer feast of the Virgin, has a double importance to the monks of Fontgombault. Besides being the Patroness of France, Our Lady in the mystery of Her Assumption is also the Patroness of the Abbey of Fontgombault. The Introit, Alleluia, Holy Communion Propers, and Kyrie IX presented in this video are just a few of the extracts from a High Mass of the Assumption chanted by the Monastic Choir of the Abbey Notre-Dame de Fontgombault, France. Originally recorded and released in 1973, by Jean Allard. Arranged for CD in 1997 by Jean-Yves Martineau.
Click this link for the Introit, Alleluia, and Holy Communion translations: http://romaaeterna.jp/liber2/grt1_137...
The Kyrie is taken from Mass IX (9) and translates from Greek as Lord have mercy, Christ have mercy, Lord have mercy.
These video clips were taken from the original video, ""FONS AMORIS" - Abbaye de Fontgombault ( Extrait film 1994 ) which was sold in DVD format at http://www.exaltavit.com
A newer version of the video, (2017) "FONS AMORIS - Les moines de Fontgombault" can be purchased here:

The story begins in 1969 when French bishop Marcel Lefebvre founded the Society of St. Pius X, also know as the "Lefebvrians." It's made up of an association of traditionalist priests who don't agree with the teachings of the Second Vatican Council, like liturgical reform and ecumenism. .
