A Day That Shook the World recalls the days of the 20th century that proved to be era-defining and pivotal in the course of modern history. These are the days on which political revolutions, technological breakthroughs, and sporting triumphs took place, and whose effects were felt the world-over. Beginning with the funeral of Queen Victoria and recounting such iconic events as the Hindenburg airship disaster and the Cuban Missile Crisis, the series also contains concise overviews of more recent events such as the Asian Tsunami and the 2012 Olympic bid. Narrated by John Humphrys.

This excerpt from Stephen Talbot's PBS documentary "1968: The Year that Shaped a Generation" recalls the May '68 student-led uprisings in Paris. The famous slogan of the protesters was "All Power to the Imagination." The revolt against the antiquated French educational system turned into a general youth rebellion, joined by workers in a number of factories, that rocked Paris and nearly toppled the French government. This excerpt includes commentary from author/activist Barbara Ehrenreich and novelist/diplomat Carlos Fuentes, who took part in the uprising as a young man then living in Paris.
"1968: The Year that Shaped a Generation" was produced by Oregon Public Broadcasting for PBS.
Produced, Directed and Written by Stephen Talbot

In 1968, WHB Radio in Kansas City was one of America's leading top 40 radio stations. In the early 2000s, I came in contact with Bud Carter, who had been WHB's News Director in the late 1960s. He gave me a tape recording that he had made while working at the station consisting of a radio station composite of the station's news coverage of the 1968 Kansas City riots following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The composite was made for the station's sales department so they could demonstrate to potential advertising clients the quality of WHB's news coverage of breaking stories that the WHB News department was known for at the time. I have simply taken that composite, wrapped some old WHB jingles around it and added pictures I found through the Kansas City Public Library's awesome website. It is with the utmost humility and respect that I offer this video as a way of preserving this important historical record, and as a small gift from me to the world in commemoration of Black History Month, 2016. I hope you enjoy.

Here is a report from 1984 about the 1968 Convention with Linda Ellerbee and John Hart featured in the piece. This does a good job at summarizing the madness of the Convention, but does make a major mistake at talking about the VP nomination. The piece claims Julian Bond was nominated but he was not due to the fact he was too young to legally serve. But I wanted to clear that out.

France Documentary: French History Documentary, 1968 Riots in Paris, French Strikes.
The May 1968 events in France were a volatile period of civil unrest punctuated by massive general strikes and the occupation of factories and universities across France. It was the largest general strike ever attempted in France, and the first ever nation-wide wildcat general strike. At the height of its fervour, the unrest virtually brought the entire advanced capitalist economy of France to a dramatic halt. The events had a resounding impact on French society that would be felt for decades to come.

Social Confrontation: The Battle of Michigan Ave. shows the events of Wednesday, August 28 at the 1968 Chicago Democratic Convention including National Guardsmen detaining protesters, mass arrests near Grant Park, and Mayor Daley cursing at opponents from the convention floor.
This film is part of a seven part module or series (The Urban Crisis and the New Militants), that "teach by raising questions rather than by attempting to answer them." The modules tell their story through editing rather than voice-over narration and show "real events, with real people acting spontaneously," as the Group explained to an educational film distributor.
Thanks to release prints of The Urban Crisis and the New Militants donated by Bill Cottle and Mike Gray to CFA and two preservation grants awarded to CFA in 2005 and 2006 by the National Film Preservation Foundation, CFA was able to preserve the entire seven-part series. All release prints and preserved prints currently reside in our FilmGroup Collection. Fifty years have passed since the summer of 1967, which saw urban riots in many of our largest cities, including New York, Newark, N.J., and Detroit. A new movie by Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow, "Detroit," dramatizes one of the most notorious incidents of those terrible days. Michelle Miller takes us back.
