Mixolydian Scales for Bass + "All Blues" and "The Chicken"
Another installment in our scale series, this week we're learning the mixolydian scale! From blues to funk to classical V7 chords, this is another really useful scale to know. We'll learn a few different shapes you can use to play the mixolydian mode, and then apply it to two most excellent bass lines.
A sidenote on "The Chicken": My favorite recording is from Jaco's "Birthday Concert" album, which is a killer album overall. The Hal Leonard transcription book that you see in the background has the version of the bass line from the "Invitation" album, however. Oh, musical trivia, how we adore you.
And yeah, that's a banana on my arm.

Walking bass is something SOOO many bass players have difficulty with. But - It's really a lot easier than you think.
Through years of teaching and experimenting with different methods I've come up with my own 'fool proof' method of getting students well on their way to becoming great at creating their own walking bass lines.
This is 'Part 2' of my beginner walking bass lesson where I show you how I actually teach my own personal students using this method and why they seem to be able to start creating there own walking...

So I am starting a 4-5 episode walking bass transcription & analysis series because I think that transcribing those lines is essential in order to become a good walking bassist - of course lines can be created by following some basic rules, but the mastery comes from listening to the guys who have laid these rules. When you transcribe these guys, you'll notice that sometimes these rules are bent to make the music more exciting - sometimes becasuse they wanted to play something new, sometimes because they were interacting with the other musicians - and that's what gives it...

True "in the moment" improvisation by three jazz greats. Live at The Town Crier in East Islip, Long Island in 1974. Warren Chiasson on vibes, featuring bass legend Jimmy Garrison from the John Coltrane Quartet, and Beaver Harris on drums. Back in the late 60s and early 70s Warren performed frequently with Jimmy in various combo settings (duo, trio, quartet). They often teamed up as the Warren Chiasson/Jimmy Garrison Duo.
This particular gig was recommended to Warren by Chet Baker, who had recently performed at this venue. Chet and Warren played regularly together in the NY metropolitan area in the mid-70s and early 80s in such places as The Half Note, Gulliver's, Stryker's, Avery Fisher Hall and others.

Hi everyone, this lesson turns in a slightly different musical direction than usual on digthatbass. RHCP was my first favorite band - as a teenager when i picked up the bass, all i wanted to play was RHCP and i was playing to their records and DVDs all the time. Their passion, soul, energy and intensity struck me. They seemed like guys who have enermous talents and BIG personalities - yet they were paying attention to each other while playing and they played from their hearts and guts - they improvised, they gave it all, they dared to make mistakes in the process...and it felt true. Yep, it was entertainment too but it was a good one and i have always felt really joyful and energized when i was listening to them. Recently, I have been listening to the Chili Peppers a lot again and i feel the same things and it's great :) So, thanks for that feeling guys, luckily, these things you never forget - seeing and hearing the joy of playing is always very inspirational to me.
My previous lessons mostly focus jazz or jazz-related stuff , so this lesson might be a surprise to some of you but i encourage you to explore and play different styles and make excursions into...
