We decided to take our 1961 Piper Colt flying on this beautiful spring PNW day. The Piper PA‑22 Colt was the end of an era as far as the short wing aircraft being constructed of steel tube and fabric covering for Piper. To describe the Colt, one has to remember the Colt’s heritage, or short wing genealogy. First came the PA‑15/17 Vagabond in 1947/48, the Clipper in 1949, the Pacer in 1950, the Tri‑Pacer in 1951 and last but not least the PA‑22 108 Colt in 1961. Many enthusiasts believe the Tri‑Pacer to be the biggest contributor to the Colts basic layout with the tricycle gear. But the Colt owes most of it’s lineage to the short wing that started it all , the PA‑15/17 Vagabond.
The structure of the Colt fuselage closely mirrors the Vagabond as both airframes do not retain the Clipper, Pacer and Tri‑Pacer rear door/seat and overhead structures. Piper understood the market for that period, Cessna had the 150 and Piper had the Pa‑18 Super Cub, but that was a tail dragger, and they needed a machine that was economical to manufacture and also to operate. Piper needed a stop gap airplane to fill the trainer role which they would not have until the PA‑28 Cherokee 140 was introduced. What they came up with was the wonderful little Pa‑22 108 Colt . Piper...

The staff of EAA and the Aero-News Network were pleased to release the latest in a series of novel Aero-TV/Airborne programs designed to draw attention to the most innovative and aggressively oriented companies in the aviation universe -- and most particularly, those with REAL news to impart at AirVenture 2018.
ANN and EAA have joined together again to present the highly successful "AirVenture Innovation Preview," (which we call the "AIP", for short), to highlight the incredibly innovative and news-making products that provide the 'BUZZ factor'. Not only have we got the BUZZ nailed down, you can see if for yourself RIGHT… and have been able to do so since several hours before the AirVenture gates were officially opened.
The AIP allowed dozens of innovators to work with us over the past few weeks to produce informational video presentations with our media staff.
As a result, we're proud to present a comprehensive program containing some 30 short, 3 to 5 minute, media presentations that will give you a glimpse of what is really new and innovative at AirVenture. The video presentations are...

Checking out this 1948 civil aviation float plane which will soon be up for sale. The current owner was setting this up as a bugout vehicle for getting from Portland to a lakeside retreat in the mountains. It currently has no engine, but the airframe has been fully restored, the interior was removed for painting but there are all new seats and upholstery waiting to go in. This is a pusher prop plane, so not so good for parachuting, but its full amphibious capability makes for some interesting options on where you can take it.
This was marketed to veteran WW2 pilots as a private aircraft, with a unique boat hull design with landing gear for water or runway landing options. This is in a restoration process to be set up as a bugout plane, but the current owner is changing plans and is looking to sell or trade it for a larger twin engine plane without the need for water operation.
The Republic SEA BEE was featured in the James Bond film "The Man with the Golden Gun", once popular, very few of these remain in service.

Ride along in formation with the newly restored World War II combat veteran P-47 Thunderbolt "Dottie Mae" during its first public demonstration flight, over Nampa, Idaho on Saturday, 26 August 2017. John Maloney flew "Dottie Mae". The P-47's owner is Jack Croul of Allied Fighters. The event was the Warhawk Air Museum's annual Warbird Roundup with "Dottie Mae" as featured guest. The Planes of Fame Museum's F4U-1 Corsair joined the formation too. "Dottie Mae" was restored by Mike Breshears and his team at Vintage Airframes in Caldwell, Idaho. Later, watch as the F4U, P-40s, a P-38 and the Planes of Fame Museum's special B-25 photography aircraft launch into a smoky afternoon sky at Nampa during Saturday's show. The Warbird Roundup continues to polish its reputation as a down-home, friendly Idaho event that attracts world-class warbirds, including the Warhawk Air Museum's own P-40s and P-51C. Special thanks to the Warhawk Air Museum, P-47 pilot John Maloney, P-51 pilot Rob Gordon, and the staff of the Nampa Airport. (Have you subscribed to the Airailimages Channel on YouTube? Thanks!) The Rage R/C Micro Vintage Stick takes a step backward in time to a nostalgic look that evokes memories of yesteryear, but with modern carbon fiber materials and updated radio technologies, like 2.4GHz. This classic-appearing aircraft is not only a great way to build R/C piloting skills, but also an enjoyable model for experienced R/C enthusiasts to fly in compact areas. The Micro Vintage Stick is produced with simple and durable construction techniques, such as the carbon fiber "stick" airframe and foam flying surfaces. The featherweight (24g without battery) construction and high-capacity flight battery combine to deliver adequate power for aerobatics like loops, spins, and barrel rolls, or extended flight times when enjoying more relaxed flight maneuvers.
The Micro Vintage Stick features a factory-applied vintage WWI-style trim scheme with everything required to fly in the box; including a 2.4GHz 4-channel capable transmitter that also doubles as a charger for the 3.7V 150mAh LiPo flight battery, and integral control board with ESC and servos. The only additional items required are four AA batteries for the transmitter and you can enjoy flying a classic aircraft from a bygone era at your local park or gymnasium within minutes of opening the box!

The Super Petrel LSA Is Here To Stay....
At the U.S. Sport Aviation Expo 2016, we learn that a biplane is not necessarily a piece of history from the golden age of aviation. ANN News Editor, Tom Patton, payed a visit to find out more about the Super Petrel, a modern amphibious biplane.
In this video, Tom talks with David Kyrk, the Director of Sales and Marketing for Super Petrel USA. Kyrk tells us that the airplane has actually been around for about 20 years, and they have just opened a new production facility in Ormond Beach, FL. The design started in France and has been built elsewhere, but now it is being made available at the new U.S. facility.
When asked why they chose a biplane configuration, Kyrk answered that it was a combination of increased stability and lower landing speed without flaps. The airplane is powered by three variations of the Rotax 900 series engine and, as Kyrk describes the performance of the airplane, you’ll be surprised by the amount of weight that it can carry.
As David and Tom discuss the details of the airplane you’ll see some great video of this unusual airplane in flight and operating on the water.

North American P-51D Mustang
The prototype for the North American Mustang first flew in October 1940. It was designed and built in 120 days in response to an urgent request by the British for a low-altitude fighter/reconnaissance aircraft. It combined the proven Allison V-1710 engine with an innovative cooling system, based on earlier work by the Curtiss Aircraft Company, and laminar-flow wings to gain more stability and speed. Needing a fighter with better high-altitude performance, the U.S. mated the proven Mustang airframe with the British Rolls-Royce Merlin engine. The result was the P-51B Mustang — a long-range, high-performance fighter-bomber with the range to escort bombers from Britain to Berlin and back again. The famous D model had a bubbletop canopy and two more machine guns. In the Pacific, the P-51 escorted B-29s on very long range (VLR) bombing raids over Tokyo.
Although almost certainly one of the best P-51D restorations in existence, the Museum's aircraft retains a certain mystery as to its origins. Last serving operationally with the Israeli Defense Force/Air Force, the aircraft was probably acquired by Israel from surplus Royal Swedish Air Force stocks in 1952. The Swedes acquired nearly all of their 100 P-51s from war-surplus U.S. Army Air...

After Restoring Mustangs, What Could Possible Be Next? A JN-4D Jenny, Of Course!
While at EAA AirVenture 2014, Special Aero-News Correspondent Michael Maya Charles has a chance to take a step back in time with Bob Baker from Alva, Oklahoma who is restoring a World War I era Curtis JN-4 Jenny.
Baker is well known and recognized for his restoration of two P-51 Mustangs, and he tells Charles that he wanted to try something different. The JN-4 Jenny certainly qualifies as something being different from a P-51.
As you hear the story of Baker’s restoration of this classic World War I trainer plane the video shows you details of its construction. When viewing the airframe without fabric covering it would appear that this is a replica rather than a restoration. Baker explains how he found the jenny and points out that most all the hardware and even much of the wood is from the original machine.
This video gives you a good look at the engineering and design that went into what are considered to be old and outdated airplanes. You have to place yourself in a mindset of being an aircraft designer in 1916 to appreciate what it took to build an airplane in those days. In this video you will enjoy your look back at the historic days of early...

Time To Get Your Hands On That Vintage Plane You've Always Wanted To Fly...
At the AMA Expo 2016, it’s easy to see that model aircraft come in all types, shapes and sizes. ANN CEO and Editor-In-Chief, Jim Campbell, stopped by a display of RC model aircraft that were built to replicate full scale aircraft from the past. Jim met with Richard Sang, the CEO of Maxford USA. They specialize in scale and near-scale radio controlled model aircraft.
The first thing you’ll notice in this video is the stunning appearance of the model aircraft being displayed by Maxford USA. Sang tells Jim that, in his opinion, an airplane should look like an airplane. Therefore, his company specializes in scale models. As you look at the models in the video it’s easy to assume that these must be difficult to build, but that’s not the case according to Sang. The aircraft are actually built at the factory and only require a small amount of assembly.
Sang describes in detail how they developed a particular model of aircraft, and it almost sounds as complex as designing and flying full-scale airplane.
This video shows the side of model aircraft that allows someone to actually fly an airplane that, in reality, may no longer exists. It’s a fascinating...

This 727 Fuselage Home is part of Hotel Costa Verde in Costa Rica. In its previous life, the vintage 1965 Boeing 727 airframe shuttled globetrotters on South Africa Air and Avianca Airlines (Colombia). The hotel salvaged this airplane, piece by piece, from its San Jose airport resting place and carefully transported the pieces to the jungles of Manuel Antonio where they have been resurrected into a unique jumbo hotel suite.
The main fuselage is anchored to a 16 metre high concrete tower with its wheels resting on two sturdy steel frames. The pointy end of the 727 juts out from the rainforest that is alive with all sorts of wild life, from brightly coloured toucans and monkeys to large iguanas.

Rare color gun camera films show AAF fighters engaging Japanese aircraft and targets on the ground near the end of World War II in the Pacific. The film is silent; actual air-cooled .50-caliber machine gun sounds and additional audio were added. Some viewers liked the audio, some muted it, and a few complained about it. We have a hard time figuring out the fuss -- if you want it the way it originally was, simply mute it and enjoy it your way. And we get it that some of you don't like this audio. It was what we had available back when this was produced, but we are looking at other options for future productions. And to answer other questions that crop up -- yes, this is color, and no, they did not always use black-and-white film in gun camera magazines. If you have seen any of this footage elsewhere in black-and-white, that is because after the original was shot in color, it could be used in other black-and-white productions of the era; it was much easier to copy and process black and white than color film. We have noticed this as we research archival film holdings. Some color footage shows up elsewhere in black and white. And yes, this is Pacific footage; no, you don't see German aircraft in here even if you think some of the airframes resemble them. And yes, Japan is...
