Speaking after her TEDxUCD 2016 talk Dr Susan Delaney said, “We tend to hold strong opinions about grief; how long it should take to heal, what helps the grief process, and whether every grief is complicated in its own way. During my TEDxUCD 2016 talk I outlined why our views are sometimes at odds with the research and discussed the concept of complicated grief and the new approaches that are being developed to treat this misunderstood condition.”
Dr Susan Delaney, a clinical psychologist, is Bereavement Services Manager with the Irish Hospice Foundation (IHF). She is a member of the International Train-the-Trainers group at ColumbiaUniversity’s Complicated Grief Programme under Professor Kathy Shear and has spearheaded the training and treatment for complicated grief in Ireland.
Susan was awarded the title of Fellow in Thanatology by ADEC (Association of Death, Education and Counselling) for her contribution to the bereavement field and is the Editor of Irish Stories of Loss and Hope, published by IHF.
The IHF has a long standing relationship with UCD. Therese Brady, who was Director of the MSc programme in Clinical Psychology at UCD for many years, founded, and was honorary Director of the bereavement services at IHF until her death in 1999. Her...

Robbie talks movingly about the experience of grief, how it changes our perception of the world and how we can all support those who are grieving.
Robbie Stamp is Chairman of Bioss International, a consultancy interested in decision making and human judgement particularly in relation to machine learning and AI. Way back when in 1995, Robbie was a Founder of The Digital Village with the late great Douglas Adams, author of the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. The Company created the Computer Game Starship Titanic and h2g2.com, the real “earth edition” of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, which was sold to the BBC and subsequently bought back. So Robbie is now Chairman of Not Panicking Ltd, which owns the digital rights to the earth edition and is imagining a new future for “The Guide”.

Business woman and former Dragon Norah Casey went on a quest to unearth the science behind the crippling debilitation of grief following the death of her husband and reveals the secret to igniting your passion for life (and it doesn’t involved “five stages”).
Broadcaster and publishing entrepreneur Norah Casey was formerly a Dragon in the popular television series Dragons’ den and is a well-known radio and television personality. Her documentary exploring issues around death and the Irish titled Way to Go was aired on RTE 1 in July 2014.
She is owner and Chairwoman of Harmonia, Ireland's largest magazine publishing company, printing over four million magazines annually for the Irish, British and USA market and selling on average 2.6 million in the Irish market annually.
She decided to leave Dragons’ Den the successful business entrepreneur show in 2013 to pursue a full time career in radio and television.
Having run many successful publishing companies in London, Norah bought her own business, Harmonia, in 2004 with a strong portfolio of brands and events.
A journalist and former nurse, Norah has been Ireland’s Publisher of the Year no fewer than four times.

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. There is power in grieving intentionally and purposefully. Telling her own story of loss, Elaine Mansfield explains the use of ritual as a tool for empowerment for life’s most challenging times.
Elaine Mansfield is a writer and bereavement educator who has lived on land overlooking the Seneca Lake Valley since 1972. She leads bereavement groups and workshops, and writes for Hospicare and Palliative Care of Tompkins County. Her writing reflects her forty years as a student of Jungian psychology, mythology, meditation and nature. Until 2011, she was a nutrition and exercise counselor. Since her husband’s death in 2008, her work has focused on healing, finding meaning, and creating a new life after loss. Elaine’s book “Leaning into Love: A Spiritual Journey through Grief” was published by Larson Publications in October 2014. The poet Naomi Shihab Nye wrote, “This magnificent, profoundly moving book gives encouragement and solace to all.” Elaine writes a weekly blog about life’s adventures and lessons at elainemansfield.com/blog.

Counselor Carl (http://serenityonlinetherapy.com) characterizes the Five Stages of Grief as a natural process that allows us to gradually work through the pain of loss. He describes the stages as overlapping and recycling, rather than linear and distinct, while still moving us closer to feeling the full impact of the loss. He denies the existence of closure but suggests that finding acceptance will allow us to return to life in the new normal. Counselor Carl's straight-forward teaching style makes complex concepts easy to understand. Counselor Carl is a licensed, professional counselor with 19 years of clinical experience both online and face-to-face.

Grief is something that nearly all of us will experience but it's something that most of us find difficult to talk about. This week on Like Minds, we find out what grief is, that it's very individual for all of us and why you don't have to "get over" it.

This video is about how to deal with grief, and how to stop grieving. If you have lost a loved one through death or anything else, we often think that the amount of sadness we feel reflects how much we loved them and how good of a person we are. This causes us to want to feel grief, and never want to stop grieving. This video explains why the intensity of grief, and duration of grief, means nothing about your love and unselfishness. Then it explains how to stop feeling grief.

Death & loss of a loved one is something we will all experience at some point in our lives. Learning to let go of someone close to you, and dealing with grief, sadness and loss is tough.
How do you do it? Especially when your emotions are so intense?
It's not something school ever really teaches you is it?
Maybe you've even heard of the 7 stages of grief. But you still feel sad and angry and hurt.
What do you do?
1.) 2:41 - Tuesdays With Morrie
Morrie Schwartz talks about allowing yourself to completely feel the emotion, instead of pushing it away, and then after exhausting it, learning to let it go.
The truth is there is no step by step process here. Grief is going to be different for all of us, and won't be the same each time we experience it. Instead of seeing it like a step by step tick box exercise, imagine its like a clockface.
You will cycle through the emotions revolving around them and over time you will get better at dealing with these...

Psychologist, writer and innovator, Geoff Warburton has spent the last 25 years studying love and loss. Geoff challenges conventional apathy about grief and loss by offering an approach that evokes curiosity, openness and compassion. His approach synthesises Eastern wisdom traditions, in-depth psychology and common sense. The emphasis of his message is towards thriving after loss -- and not merely surviving. He presents a perspective that challenges Western thought by saying there is no 'right' way to grieve and advocating that grief can be 'the ride of your life'. Working from both his personal and professional experiences of bereavement, he goes so far as to say that loss through bereavement can become an adventure to be had, rather than a problem to be solved.

According to Mike Shaw “Grief Happens,” but gratitude is your foundation for healing. It’s all about perspective. Your lows give you a greater ability to appreciate new highs. Trust that you will heal. You CAN live a FULL life after grief. Mike shows you how gratitude and grieving are closely linked. He goes as far as saying that grief reveals gifts, he’s grateful for its validation, and for the balance it brings to your life. Grief Happens – but YOU can turn the tables; healing is possible.
